Microbial And Plant Systems For Biopharmaceutical Production
Sunil Mehra
Abstract
Biopharmaceuticals are considered essential in modern medicine. There has been a great increase in use of vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, therapeutic proteins, enzymes, nucleic-acid–based therapies and other forms of biopharmaceuticals for various medicinal purposes. Production platforms for most of these complex molecules in the past were more dependent on mammalian cell lines. This paper presents modern production methodologies using microbial and plant systems for biopharmaceuticals. The paper aims to identify, and analyze how these systems speed up the process of production of biopharmaceuticals. It compares and contrasts different systems based on levels of scalability, and reduced risk of contaminants. This paper reviews the state of plant-based (hairy roots, plant cell cultures, stable and transient whole-plant expression) and microbial (yeast, filamentous fungi, (bacterial, microalgae) platforms for biopharmaceutical production. It delves into various expression strategies, processing issues, ethical and regulatory considerations, and prospects for future innovation.
