Herb and Food Drugs: Interactions and Clinical Significance

Herb and Food Drugs: Interactions and Clinical Significance

Ahmed Faraz

Abstract

The significance of herbs and food–drug interactions lies in some of the major factors such as impact of drugs on patients, possible, expected and unexpected therapeutic outcomes, and public health at a global platform. Herbal medicines along with the regular prescription drugs are common in many scenarios Herbal medicines or the food drugs are considered safe, but these can significantly alter the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of traditional and modern medicines. This study is aimed to review different types of mechanisms of food–drug and herb–drug interactions, It explores the efficacy, reliability and of such drugs. It explores some clinically significant examples such as ginkgo with anticoagulants, grapefruit juice with statins, and St. John’s Wort with antidepressants. It provides insights into the implications for clinical practices and patient safety.

It concludes with discussion on the current and future strategies for risk mitigation and the role of clinicians and pharmacists in knowledge sharing, knowledge promotion  and patient safety.
