Gender Representation in Contemporary English Literature
Abstract
Gender representation as literary tool and tactic in English literature. The paper attempts to explore, identify, analyze gender representation in modern and ultra modern English literature. It delves deeper into ways in which contemporary literature with powerful narratives are constructed, or deconstruct the conventional norms of gender writing in English. It navigates the diverse gender identities with a due focus on the literature from late 20th century to the present. The study focuses on the portrayal of men and women, LGBTQ and other characters. Apart from this, it highlights connectivity or relevance among different themes of social expectations, power, emotional intelligence, and other themes that directly or indirectly connect with the broader theme of gender representation. The research also explores postcolonial theories, feminism, masculinism, other narrative voices, and interrelated thematic concerns. The findings underscore the multifaceted gender discourse, the role of the contemporary writers in transforming this literary theme into a literary innovation, technique, and strategy for better and more convincing narratives.
